White Glittered Moravian Star

I love Moravian Stars. These carefully folded strips of paper make a wonderful three dimensional ornament that has been decorated in many different ways. The ones shown here have been embellished with glitter, but traditionally, they have been dipped in wax to preserve them. Most of the vintage ones that I’ve found have been treated this way.

Red Moravian Star Ornament

The stars shown here were made by a member of my church who remembers them as a Scandanavian craft. She bought imported paper strips made especially for making these ornaments.

In my online research, I discovered that her tradition and what I know as Moravian (German) tradition are shared by many other traditions and have been known by many names including Folded Paper Stars, German Stars or German Star Ornaments, Swedish Stars, Moravian Stars, Froebel’s Stars, Christmas Stars, Origami Stars, Star Ornaments and Ribbon Stars.
I found two sites that give good directions on how to make them.
